Pinyon Jay Community Science in the Southwest—Yes, You Can Help!

Speaker: Cathy Wise, Audubon Southwest’s Senior Manager for Community Building

Thursday, January 15, 2026, 7-8:30 pm

Otherwise known as the “Blue Crow”, Pinyon Jays are iconic birds of the Intermountain West. We as local residents have watched the birds decline in our yards, on our hikes, and even on backcountry adventures. Now with a simple phone app, we can help researchers at the Great Basin Bird Observatory and Cornell Lab of Ornithology get a bead on where Pinyon Jays still are, allowing conversations on how we can safeguard these strongholds. Although the bird was petitioned for protected status, the review process was waylaid due to the government’s shut down, and the current political climate. Let’s all do what we can, NOW, to help our Blue Crows.
